Existing customer, new computer install

Solved

Hi there:

My old desktop does not support Windows 11, so I have upgraded to a a new desktop computer.  I have Sage 50 Canadian Edition installed on my old computer and want to put it onto the new computer.  The Help/About on my old computer says version is "Sage 50 Pro Accounting release 2018.0"

During the install, it prompts me for a serial number - I log into Sage online and can see my existing product, serial number, and activation.  When I enter (either manually, or copy/paste) the serial number it displays an error message "The serial number is incorrect. Please make sure you are using a valid 14-digit serial number".  I got the 14-digit serial number right from the Sage 50 website for my account.

Not sure how I can get this installed onto the new desktop.  This version does everything I need for my small sole-proprietorship business - I just need to get this version installedon my new computer.  Any ideas or advice would be most appreciated.

  • After you select Help, About, then click the Support Info button.  It will give you the installation info required to install on a new computer.

    Hi Golfguy:

It appears as if you are talking about 2 different versions of software. You state you are using 2018.0, however, your message posted says you are installing 2015.3. As Richard pointed out check your older computer under the Help menu of Sage 50.

    Hi Agate:

Thanks for taking the time to respond.  You dug up some OLD memories.  Now that my memory is working, I recall way back having Simply Accounting 2008 on my old Windows 7 machine for my golf business.  When that old computer was retired I went to put S/A onto a Windows 10 computer - could not get my 2008 data to the 2018 version directly - Had to purchase the 2018 Sage version, and had to install several "in-between" trial versions to gradually convert my S/A 2008 data to Sage 2018 format.  The last "bridge" trial install version we had to use was the Sage 2015 version, which then was able to be converted or upgraded to the Sage 50 Canada 2018 version.  That is likely why the last install file references 2015.3 (I "THINK").

Any idea where the 2018 install file would reside on my old (and still functioning) Windows 10 computer?  Or is the Sage 2018 install file available anywhere?

I was forced to update to the 2018 version even though I legitimately owned the SA2008 version, and it was fully functional for what I use it for.  My Windows 10 version worked flawlessly, I just would like to get my 2018 version working on the Windows 11 computer now (hopefully without having to buy accounting software for my very small business yet again).  I will not use the cloud version, as it is way overkill for what I need.  I may have to look at another brand if this cannot be resolved.

Any ideas from anyone would be most appreciated.  Thank you.

    Regards,

    GolfGuy

    Hi Richard:

Thanks for responding, unfortunately clicking Help/About/Support Info does not give me the required information.  I tried searching the Sage forums with no luck either.  More light is shed in the below post.

I am surprised, unless I misunderstand what you need.  I thought you needed the serial number and keycode information to reinstall the program on a new computer.

When I do reinstalls for clients, I get the information from their old computer under Help, About Sage 50...., Support Info which gives me a dialog like the image below.  I tried to get it from my 2018 version but for some reason my membership for 2018 has expired.

So I went back a year and pulled the image below from 2017.  I've done the same thing in all versions back to 2008.  If the problem is that the 2018 serial number you have will not work in the 2015.3 installation program you are using, then that is correct.  It only works on the year it is registered for.  You can find the installation program usually under C:\Sage\Sage 50 Accounting Installer Files - CDN Release 2018.0.

    Hi Richard:

    Thanks again for the response.

You are correct, I encounter an error when I enter the valid serial number for my software. The only folder on my Win-10 machine is C:\Sage\Sage 50 Accounting Installer Files - CDN Release 2015.3 -- there is no 2018 folder, only the 2105 install folder.

    I found the screen in my Win-10 Sage install that you reference in your screenshot, and I receive the invalid error when punching that number in.  That same serial number (as in your screenshot) from my WIn-10 Sage is the same one that appears when I log into Sage;

In the "Select Product" box in my above screenshot, there are two entries, "Sage 50 Pro Accounting Canadian version", and one for "Sage 50 Canadian Edition General" however the General one has no data below for serial number, etc.

I'm thinking if I could get the Sage50 2018 install file this might alleviate my issue, but I cannot find that anywhere when I search Sage website - spent a couple of hours trying to find this already.

If it matters, this is some old documentation I had for converting my old SA2008 to the 2018 version so I could continue to use my existing data.

Convert old 2008 files to 2018.docx

    Any ideas?

    Thanks again.

OK, if you don't have the installation files in the c:\Sage folder and you don't have the downloaded file in the C:\Users\Public\Documents\Sage Software\Simply Accounting\Download folder, then you can get the installation file from Agate or myself (you are looking for a file called something like SA_20180CP1.exe - note the ...80C... could be ...81C... or ...82C... or something similar).  You will also likely need an updated version called something like SA_20184CPUP1.exe.  You can reach either of us through the email in the Contact area of our forum profiles.

    Hi Richard:

I have searched my WIn-10 machine for the character string "SA_20" and all that is returned containing that string is 2018_SA_2008DCPUP1.EXE file that was located in an old backup folder called "Simply Update Files", and SA2008DCPUP1.EXE (found in the same folder).

I have sent you a private note via the forum profile.

    Thank you very much!

Just as a follow-up to this thread.  The advice I received from Richard did the trick and I now have fully functional Sage running on my Windows-11 machine.  Thank you VERY much Richard for the clear instructions and all of your help.  I owe you one!
