Setting up an employer expense eg: Pension in payroll that will print on the paystub

Suggested

I am using Sage 50 Accountant Edition and I need to set up an Employer Expense in Payroll to capture the Pension payment that will show up on the employee paystub.  Eg: I have to pay $7/hour towards and employee pension.  It is based on their hours worked.  One option is Setup-Settings-Payroll-Other Expenses. Under the user defined expenses, I only have two options, set it as an amount or set it up as a percentage.  There is no hourly option.  Then in the employee set up, I can assign a amount under the WHSCC & other expenses column.  I can assign an amount there and then override it during the payroll run.  This is inconvenient as I have 21 employee's.  I need it to print on the paystub so they can see what was contributed to their pension.  The title is printing but not the amount.  Can someone offer a solution?

In our office, we tend to use Paydirt for payrolls that require this sort of customization and automatic calculations.  Paydirt is published by Qlab Systems based in Vancouver, and is very customizable with excellent support.  You choose, paycode by paycode, whether or not it should show on the paystub.  Works for payrolls all across Canada.  No phone-in support, but when I email in a support request I always get a fast response that actually solves the problem.  Paydirt will produce a file that you can import into Sage to make all of your payroll-related journal entries.

    The downsides of Paydirt are:

    - It's another program, so an additional cost to you.

    - Because it's very customizable, set-up can be difficult.  I always do my own setup, so I don't know how much Paydirt's support staff can help with this.

    - After 15+ years of use for multiple payrolls, I have found a few minor weaknesses:

          - It sometimes gets confused between January 12 and December 1.  This can be fixed by making sure your regional date settings are set a certain way.

          - It is slightly clumsy in how it divides up earnings between T4 Box 40 and T4 Box 71 for First Nations employees who work partly on and partly off reserve.  (It is excellent and seamless for employees who work completely off, or completely on, reserve.)

         - While it is much, much better than Sage at handling T4 slips for employees who work in multiple provinces during the year, it still needs occasional tweaks for multi-province employees who max out on CPP or EI.

    - It can create importable journal entries that use departments, or that use projects.  I'm not sure if it can handle both at once.
