Reconciliation issues

SOLVED

I have reconciled  the bank statement and posted it, but when I go to reconcile the next month, it shows that the previous month hasn't been posted.

4 attempts now and still the previous months information is still there. I'm so confused. I have been doing bank reconciliations for 15 + years and have never had this issue

    SUGGESTED

One way to look into this is to run the Bank Rec report, Summary with Outstanding Transaction Detail.  Run the report from Jan 1 to the latest date possible for the bank account.  Pay attention to each reconciliation showing on the report and the dates used for the statement dates and whether the reconciliation is reconciled or not.

If you have already printed a completed bank rec (eg. it says Reconciled on it), then you may be working with a second data file for some reason.

Thank you, I will give that a try.

I think I figured out the issue I'm having. I did 3 months of reconciliation, printed out the reports you suggested and the report says 'Reconciled' However, if my clients tell me that they want me to change something,

Example: A sale for a 'vehicle', (which has been deposited and reconciled) decides he wants to change that vehicle to 'Machinery sales' that transaction shows up the next month as 'outstanding'

I'm not changing the bank account, just the category. So, why does it show up as 'Outstanding)? And so, the next Bank Reconciliation won't balance.

In my 15 years of doing recocliations, this has never happened before. I don't understand, and I don't now how to solve this. Any advice?

What you are describing is that you had posted an entry that affected the bank.  Then you reconciled the bank for that month.  Then after the reconciliation was completed, you adjusted the entry and changed the account you posted the sale to but not the bank account.

    Using a simple example:

    Original Entry

    Apr 15/24 Journal entry J500 - Customer 1

    Acct     Dr          Cr

    1060    100

    4200                  100

Then changed it to a different revenue account

    Apr 15/24 Journal entry J750 - Customer 1

    Acct     Dr          Cr

    1060    100

    4600                  100

If this is what happened, then you should also see this entry below in the General Journal report and in the bank rec.

    Apr 15/24 Journal entry J749 - Reversal of J500, correction is J750

    Acct     Dr          Cr

    1060                  100

    4200    100

This entry reversed out the original completely using the same accounts and the same date as the original entry.

You should have seen this entry in the bank rec.  If not then you are likely hiding the corrections (checkbox at the top of the columns).

You also see the final correcting entry for J750.  Because the bank account entry in J749 is a credit of $100 and the entry J750 is a debit of $100, on your next bank rec, click both as cleared (but J749 should already be marked as a correction and cleared.  You can adjust the comment because from Cleared to Adjustment or Reversed, fi you wish.

You are correct. I am hiding the corrections checkbox. Thank you so much. You are my savior. Slight smile

I thank you sooo much for your help and wish you a wonderful day. You just made my day wonderful.

    Glad it helped.

Keep that option turned off unless you get really comfortable about how it works.  I've been doing this longer than I care to admit and when that checkbox was added to the program, I tested it and I left it turned off.

Hahaha. I have always turned it off, but obviously it was added as you said, and created some concerns. I am comfortable using it, but if you have a client who doesn't come forward with all the in's and out's and paperwork and keeps changing things, it's a pain in the B--t.
