If possible, restoring a backup would be the best course of action. It may be that the software was was running scheduled backups, if you can search the hard drive for files with the exension.001 that would be a good starting point.

I managed to retrieve the old hard drive and read the files and access the backup files from my new laptop.

I lost 1 invoice so all in all I got off lightly
