Users couldn't access Sage Accounts 50 (Remote Access bug)

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but this issue caused me a problem this week that could have been a bigger issue if I was not able to get to my office. I have a small office with 3 users. All the data is stored on my PC and it is left on at all times. I have remote access to the data as I sometimes work from home, the other two users don't use remote access, just access the data on my PC. I work part time and only work 3 mornings a week. The other day, both my users messaged me to say they could not access Sage accounts. I thought there may have been an issue with the mapped drive but I got them to check and it was OK. I ended up having to go to my office on my day off to see what was wrong. Turns out, I could not access the accounts either until I signed in to reactivate the remote data. This is a totally unacceptable situation as there should be no reason why users accessing local data cannot log in. Sage need to look into this. If I had been away on holiday, my users would have had no access to the accounts until I returned as I do not want to give anyone else my windows login password. What I would like to know, is how often does the data access get revoked? If the solution is disconnecting remote data, then this what I will need to do.

    Hi Bill,

If I understand correctly, you have a PC in the office with your data that is always on, that you connect to from home using Remote Data Access (RDA).

You also have two colleague PCs in the office that connect to the data through mapped drives.

Whilst not working remotely, the PCs in the office looking at the main computer where the data is held are connecting to a set of data that is set up for RDA, as a result, they may be prompted with the authenticating errors you refer to.

One solution could be to use a generic email address with the dataset, such as “accounts@......“ If that email was shared between all 3 users then any user would have the required details to reauthenticate as required.

    I hope this helps.

Hi Andy, thanks for your reply. This sounds like a good idea. Only issue I can see is I am sure I had to use 2 part verification and a code came to my phone. If this is the case, how would we get around this?

    Hi Bill,

There are a couple of possible workarounds for this. You could use a desktop authenticator app or you could ensure the recovery code is held somewhere where all agents have access to it, you could then update the code each time it is used. There's more about generating recovery codes here
