Does the reference in the bank rule on Sage 50 have to be exactly the same as the reference on the bank feed ?

Eg - direct debits to Google Ireland Ltd always have a different reference number following Google Ireland Ltd, so a bank rule with just Google Ireland Ltd for the reference doesn't seem to be working ?
