Understanding the Change
Microsoft is removing the Application Impersonation role for Exchange Online. This began in May 2024, with full removal planned by February 2025. Application Impersonation lets applications access user mailboxes on their behalf. With its removal, applications will need new ways to connect to MS Exchange Online. The goal is to improve security and make mailbox access the same across Microsoft services.
For Exchange On-Premise servers, there is no news from Microsoft about removing Application Impersonation. It can still be assigned and managed with PowerShell in these environments.
The Impact on Sage CRM
Application Impersonation is key for Sage CRM to work with Exchange Online. It allows Sage CRM to access and manage users’ mailbox data. Without it, this connection may stop working for customers using Exchange Online.
This change only affects Exchange Online users. Organizations using Exchange On-Premise can still use Application Impersonation as before.
Sage's Solution
Sage is working on a patch to keep the Sage CRM and Exchange integration running smoothly. This patch will make sure the system works even after Application Impersonation is removed from Exchange Online.
The patch is the first step in a larger upgrade coming in Sage CRM 2025 R1. This upgrade will move the Sage CRM integration from using Exchange Web Services (EWS) to Microsoft Graph.
If you're using Exchange On-Premise, this upgrade won’t affect you. The current EWS-based integration will keep working as it does now.
Sage is dedicated to providing an easy solution with minimal disruption to your IT setup. We want to ensure you can keep using Sage CRM with Exchange Online without issues.
Important Notes:
Some manual setup may be needed for your MS Exchange Online instance.
