Web GL Financial Reporter always places results in new workbook instead of in Print Area.

SOLVED

After a year or more getting clients up and running on the Web Screens and Web Financial Reporter, I've noticed adoption and persistance with the Web Financial Reporter by clients remains low - much lower than the Web Screens.  As I spend most of my time resolving tech issues, I never actually sat down and spent significant time using the Web Financial Reporter as a user.  A client recently gave me a lot of feedback after they tried really hard to go fully Web Screens and WebFR with their main feedback being the inability to refresh reports in place .  For some reason I had never come across this.  When I looked into it myself I found:

  • When a Web FR template is run using Web G/L Print Financial Statements, the results are generated and downloaded into to a new file containing only results - no formulas.  If the template contained multiple reporting sheets, only the first sheet's formulas are run.
  • When a Web FR template is edited, causing the template to be downloaded and opened into Excel (with a live connection back to the server), the same thing happens when running FR View i.e. the results are displayed in a whole new workbook and not in the defined Print Area of the template.  If (like our clients) you have a management pack style workbook containing many sheets of FR formulas reporting on various aspects of the business, there is no way to simply refresh each sheet, updating the results in place.  Instead if your workbook contains 30 sheets, using the Web FR Excel add-in to refresh them, you will end up with 30 small new workbooks, each containing one sheet of results.  In the Classic FR, even if a client doesn't use a macro to refresh each sheet, its still quite acceptable to click on each sheet once, refreshing it with the data updating in place.
  • I love the innvoation of having the Web FR add-in connected back to the Web Server, that is cool, and I can understand Sage's chage of templates always being templates, however as that's not how its worked for 20+ years, and there is no alternative for running multi-sheet templates in FR Web, the rate of adoption is going to remain very low.

So in short, if anyone has come up with a workaround for Web FR always placing results in a new workbook, instead placing them in a Print Area or similar, that would be awesome :-)
