New CPA has not provided year-end adjustments in 3 years! What to do???

Suggested

We switched to new CPA a few years back (ours of 20+ yrs retired), and they have yet to provide us with any year-end adjustments(since 2022!), despite repeated requests.  Our owner has steadfastly refused to switch to a new CPA, but is finally seeing the necessity. Should I leave this to the new CPA to handle, or what, if anything, should I do?

That is annoying, I suggest clients send the Standard Balance Sheet to the CPA prior to having to run the year end wizard which should trigger them to get those adjustments.  For now you could get the 2024 Corporate return and tie out to the schedule L.  You would book the adjustments as of 1/1/25 and the Balance Sheet would be correct and Retained Earnings would roll.  Then start booking the tax adjustments going forward before running the wizard.  We assist clients with all these steps, reach out if you need assistance.  [email protected]

If 2024 is your last closed Fiscal Year, you can import General Journal Entries into the closed 2024 Year which will bring your balances current through that time frame, and those adjustments will then roll into 2025 without affecting your 2025 Financial Statement activity. We can assist you with import into the closed year when you have your adjustments available.

That is a tough spot, especially with the books drifting for several years. In practice I would not wait on the old CPA: have the owner engage a new firm now, give them read-only access or exports, and ask for a clear scope (catch-up tax tie-out, prior-year journal entries, and a written timeline). Until adjustments land, treat financials as provisional and flag the gap to anyone who relies on them. The suggested answers about tying to the corporate return and booking opening entries are sensible once you have numbers you trust.
