Is it still true that you can't change an employee from hourly to salary? and if so, what does this mean, the employee will get 2 w2's?

Hi Lauriedasz,
Yes, once an employee record is saved the pay method (hourly/salary) cannot be changed. A new record will need to be created, the two records can be combined during the W2 processing in order to produce a single W2 for the employee.
Thank you.
ok, what is the reasoning behind this? I would really like to know. Now I will need to keep tract of their gross total, because of the limits on some of the payroll taxes
Without going into technical details, changing the pay method after the record is saved causes data corruption/integrity issues within the employee records in the database. The field is locked to prevent this from occurring.
Thank you.
Are there programs being written to link the like social security numbers when calculating payroll tax limits?
Hi KARENIP,
I'm afraid I don't have any information around changes/enhancements at this time.
Thank you.
How do you combine the two records during the W-2 processing - is this part done manually?
"changing the pay method after the record is saved causes data corruption/integrity issues within the employee records in the database."
so why NOW, has it become a problem??? I've used Sage/Peachtree for over 35 years.....and it was never a problem for me. Not once did I have corruption or integrity issues. And I have had about 50 different Companies in my program. This is so stupid. You penalize a whole subscription base because some code you entered into the software a couple years ago created this problem, and the techie geeks who have never generated weekly payrolls or issued W2s just decided this would not be a problem. Either that or some beginning payroll clerk complained that she had to dig around to a person's old hourly wage and OT wage rate when someone went Back to hourly. I just would like to know the technical details. And why they became technical details, after decades of it being a normal part of our program??
As long as the two Employee records have the same name, the same address, and the same Social Security Number, then the W2 Wizard will pick up on this and prompt with a question asking if you want to merge the Employee records.
