Bank Reconciliations

SOLVED

My company has been using Sage since 2017 and has never reconciled the bank account in Sage. I would like to start reconciling the bank accounts in Sage. How do I go about doing that? Do I have to go back to the beginning and reconcile the accounts? Or can I just start now? They keep a paper checkbook, which is fine for a backup, but they are not using the software to its potential.

    Adorward,

It's up to you how you want to do it, but if you start now, you will get every entry made since 2017. I recommend you put a cutoff date of the starting year and reconcile every month to your bank statement in that reconcile. When you're done, see if the ending balance matches the last statement for that year. If not, you have two options. You can either go through each month and figure out the problem and spend a lot of time, or just finalize it, move on the the next year and then see where you are when you finally come up to 2024. At that point, start doing them month by month. We find in most cases, they will even out at the end or you would just need to make an adjustment. Also, if you have done any cash transfers and just used both banks in the entry, when you reconcile one account, it will automatically clear on the other. So be aware of that. If you do need more help on bank reconciliations, you can always access Live Chat and ask for a callback. The easiest way to access Live Chat is through the software via the Live Chat button on the main Sage 100 Contractor screen (lower left corner).

It's a long shot, but often works out well.

Bring in the bank reconciliation with cutoff date as of the last reconciliation you did on paper.  Highlight the "Status" column and mark everything as Cleared.  Then go back and unclear those items that are still listed as open on your last paper reconciliation.
