Slip entry - when changing the slip activity, time spent is deleted

Solved

When entering a timeslip, we enter the time spent by entering a time range (ex: 11:00 - 11:45).  If we need to change the task after the time range is entered, the time spent range automatically changes to 11:00 - 11:00, resulting to -0- time spent.  I've tried changing the slip entry sequence, but that doesn't impact the above problem.

This is really a problem when billing a client, but need to change the task name on a slip - the time spent then changes to -0-.

Can you give us a more detailed step by step about how you are keying the slip?  There is more than one way to create a Time Entry now in Timeslips and I would like to test the method that you are using to create.

For example:  In my copy of Timeslips, if I click on the yellow plus sign in the upper left toolbar and choose Time Slip...

I get the following interface (click to enlarge if it is too small to see):

Note that the Timekeeper and Task have defaulted as per my preferences, but I have not typed anything yet.

If I click on the little watchband button to the right of the Time Spent value, I can enter a start and stop time. Is this how you are putting in 11:00 to 11:15? Are you manually putting it in? Or are you running a Timer that accrues the time spent?

In my experimenting, the behavior you describe is occurring. No matter if I save the slip first, then edit the Task, any edit of the Task resets the timer.

IF however, I click the slide button for the timer on and let it run for a bit, then turn it off and change the Task, the time does NOT reset.

So, hence my inquiry to you on EXACTLY how you are entering a new slip. Because it may matter.

Also, if you are manually putting in 15 minutes, why use the start and stop times? You could just key it. You can type .25 in the time spent box and it will convert it to 15 minutes for you. That method will also tolerate changing the Task with no reset.

So, again, what is the workflow you are trying to achieve.

    Thanks for the reply Nancy,

We are using the same slip entry screen that you have illustrated.  And we are a CPA firm which utilizes numerous tasks.

Start/stop times are helpful to staff and management in our firm.  However, using the running timer is more of a problem considering all the interruptions throughout the day; thus the manual entering of the start/stop times.

When we enter the start/stop times (for example 11:00 - 11:45), then later change the task, the stop time is reset to 11:00 instead of 11:45, resulting in 11:00 - 11:00 start/stop times.  We also toyed around with changing the sequencing of the slip entry info; but this didn't resolve the issue.  We have been using timeslips for 30+ years. This particular problem only surfaced when we upgraded to Sage Timeslips Premium Pro a few months ago.

(Another related issue that has bugged me for a few years also involves the start/stop time.  Prior to 2017 (plus or minus), after entering a slip with 11:00 - 11:45 start/stop times, the next slip start time would automatically default to 11:45 (the previous slip stop time).  But that no longer happens.  Believe it or not, this is a pain.)

, I just did a couple more tests in v2020 and v2015. My v2020 wipes the time, my v2015 does not. So, all to say, you are right!

But what can you do with what you currently have til they fix it?  You didn't mention which level of Timeslips Premium you are using, but if you have Day View in your version, it might be worth a try. (Starter does not have Day View, but Standard, Pro and Elite do.)

Sage made a YouTube video of how to use the feature here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5hKPdEfxgc

    Couple of things to note:

    - This has the advantage of having your user drag the Task onto the view to create the entry, so perhaps less likely to then need to change the Task

-References are not required (video does not make that clear)

    - you can change the default duration in the Settings so that it is your most popular answer

-Note that just dragging and dropping does not save the slips. You need to click save, but you can key several first.

See if that might help. If you decide to adopt that method, you could change the Preferences to have Day View open up whenever you open up Timeslips so folks can get right to recording immediately.
