Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

In Project management the way to define the project itself is key.

You will see that most of the time each company sets their projects differently depending on the company organization, background, and business area usage.

Neither the less however a company organizes its projects it must deal with the same concept and best practices: Þ Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) A work breakdown structure is used to define and group a project’s tasks in a way that helps to organize and define the total work scope of the project. It is a decomposition of the work to be executed by the project team. A work breakdown structure element may be a product, data, service, or any combination thereof. A WBS also provides the necessary framework for detailed cost estimating and control along with providing guidance.

 Product Breakdown Structure (PBS)

Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) A product breakdown structure is an exhaustive, hierarchical tree structure of components that make up an item, arranged in a whole-part relationship.

It details the physical components of a particular product, or system, under consideration. The formal PBS comes in the form of a hierarchy (BOMs).

It begins with the final product at the top of the hierarchy followed by the sub-categorized elements of the product. The PBS, a product breakdown structure serves to reduce a complex project, or product, into manageable components. As a result, teams can obtain a clear understanding of a product, its components, and what is required to provide those components.

Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS)

Cost breakdown structure (CBS) The cost breakdown structure classifies the costs within a project into cost units/cost centers and cost elements/cost types. The establishment of a cost structure aids efficient cost planning, controlling, and the introduction of measures to reduce costs.

The components of this structure are: Þ Cost structure: this is related to the CBS This is a multi-level structure. In each budget level, you can define budget lines which will be used to set up the type of cost you plan to track on that Budget. On each budget line if the cost type contains a default price it will be applied. All other costs must be entered manually.
