Tips and tricks on how to easily update Sage 50 Accounting Canada

2 minute read time.

Whenever there is an update for Sage 50 program some users get worried, sometimes frustrated because the last update did not go smoothly. That is specially the case in network environments. Mostly there are updates twice a year in January and July to coincide with Canada Revenue Agency payroll tax updates.

Sage usually releases the update two weeks prior to the update effective date. What most people don’t know is that even if the update effective date is July you can download and install it in June and the program will know for example in payroll that it should apply January or July tax tables depending on the paycheque date. So I highly recommend installing the update as soon as it is available.

Most of the time when the data file is on a network one computer gets the update first! When that happens because the company data file has been updated, other users cannot open the shared database. Those users will need to update their computers. But they find themselves in a dilemma because they cannot open the database to check for updates. Now what is the best course of actions…!?

I find it less complicated to locate the update file installer on the computer that is already up to date. The good news is that Sage 50 Canada will save by default updates on the following location: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Sage Software\Simply Accounting\Download.

From the only computer in the network that can open the database browse to the above location then look for the latest update. You can look by date for a file like this: SA_2014XCPUP1 (which stand for Simply Accounting 2014 X number of time Canadian Product Update) example SA_20143CPUP1 is the July 2014 update. Once the update file is located it can be transferred to a network location (accessible by other users) or a flash drive. It needs to run locally on each workstation that is not up to date yet.

Note:

Sage 50 updates are very important not only for users processing payroll but all Sage 50 users. It is also very important to keep Microsoft Windows updated as Sage uses the latest technology available on Windows. Microsoft does not support Windows XP operating system anymore since April 2014, as result Sage does not support program installations on Windows XP, but we will provide functionality support if Sage 50 in installed and work fine on Windows XP. Example since July 2014 update there is an emailing issue with Windows XP. Users that were able to email invoices or paystubs before cannot anymore because of compatibility issues between Windows XP and Sage 50. A Windows Operating System update can resolve this issue. I will highly recommend upgrading Windows XP to a supported version (Vista, 7 or 8).
