use two computers...

SOLVED

I know just enough to know that I need help and am confused because every thing i have done in the past is not working now...

I have a SB that was running sage 50 2017 and had it on the store computer and a second log in form a laptop. long story short that laptop is inoperable and we purchased a brand new laptop and the latest copy of sage 50 2020. For the life of me I can not get the files to open on the new computer...

I'm looking for a step by step Gide to how to upgrade my old store computer to Sage 50 2020 and also have access to the file with my second user profile on the same local network so we can do data entry in the back room and still run the day to day on the primary computer.

I keep finding information on cloud subscriptions and things with added expenses.  I previously was able to function under what if memory serves me was one drive and the laptop was using the data from the primary computer via network and had to be running in-order to use the laptop.

My issue is currently, I can not get the 2017 version to upgrade to the 2020 and the laptop running the 2020 cant seem to "read" the old files... I just get errors and when i installed the 2020 on the primary computer, it didn't seem to "see" the data files for the business and can not find or update them.

is there a youtube video that can explain the steps I need to do or can someone point me in the right direction?????

Things I know:

I have a two user copy of sage 50

i have two distinct user logins and have access to the SYSADMIN account

A lot of what you are asking is what is taught in IT courses at college and university.  Setting up a computer to network with another computer might be a bit beyond how to help with Sage 50 but I will give it a try.

Computer 1 (primary) where the Sage 50 data files are located (*.sai file and *.saj folder).

Can you open the older Sage 50 2017 program and your company file on Computer 1?  If so, go to File, Properties so you can see where the file is located and what it is called.

You should backup this file right now from File, Backup.  Give it a good name so you know it's the file from before you upgraded.

This *.sai file is the same file you should open when you get 2020 installed.

It sounds like you have installed 2020.  If so, can you open the sample company file?  If the sample company opens ok, then you should now be able to find the file and open it.  The conversion should start automatically.

    Computer 2 the new notebook.

Sounds like the person who set this up did not setup the network portion of it.  I have not done true IT work for almost 20 years now so I don't have a step-by-step guide.

However, the concepts are that your Compute 1 should still be set up to share the company files.

Go into the System program on Computer 1 and find the Computer name.

On Computer 2, look for that name in Windows Explorer under Network.  If you get messages about turning on Network Discovery, then either turn it on or type the computer name into the Address bar of Windows Explorer.  eg. if the computer is called Bob-1234 then type \\Bob-1234.

This should help you get to the resources.  You should find one that looks like Sage 50 Data or something like that.  Assuming you used to access the Sage 50 company file on this old notebook through Drive S: then map the s: Network drive to this resource.

Try to open Sage 50 2020 on the new computer and see if you can open the file from Drive s:

You will have to adjust the info above for your specific scenario because I made a few assumptions based on how I normally set things up.  However, there are 3 or 4 ways to do this setup so it could be different.
