session date always starts Jan 1st

when I log in my session date is always Jan 1st 2024, is there anyway to have the session date always be the date it actually is automatically ? ( i.e. March 27, 2024)

  • Short answer is no.

Under Setup, User Preferences, View you can Show Change Session Date at Startup.  Then when it shows up as you open the file, hit the down arrow button once to get today's date, then hit Enter.  Note: at year end, using the down arrow will switch to the beginning of the new fiscal year.  Do not change the fiscal year here.  Please make sure you open the file on the last day of the fiscal year, get a proper backup and then switch fiscal years from the Maintenance menu when you are ready to switch fiscal years.

Or you can just change the session date where it is displayed on the Home Screen or on the Maintenance menu.

The design of the Session Date is to tell the program what you want TODAY to be.  Then it will give you date-related messages based on that date.  It allows you to do catch-up accounting over previous periods/years and post entries in those periods.  The program will let you know when you go outside those periods if you use an appropriate Session Date.  It also helps prevent entries posted to the wrong fiscal year.

In one of those other programs, I had a client posting in a new fiscal year in January, was entering the date of Jan 18, 2010 and entered Jan 18, 2001.  The program allowed it to post without any warning.  The owner now allows me to lock out fiscal years but it still allows any entry to any date within the lockout without warning.
