I had exactly the same situation about 2 - 3 years ago. Only fix was to call support and have them correct it. You may want to do a backup prior to support getting in there.

thanks for the answer, did the fix involve creating a whole new company or were you able to "save" your existing file? I would not want to lose all my history by rebuilding a new file.

Please backup your data first (before advance to new fiscal year) by going to File, Backup.

Then, follow the link below to run dbutil to rebuild your data file.

Run dbutil on the data file that is not yet advanced to new fiscal year.  After running dbutil, advance to new fiscal year and check the balance.

Running dbutil will not create a whole new company.  You will still have your existing data file.

Thanks for the help, unfortunately dbutil did not fix the issue. Went through the steps but when I opened the file the error is still there. Maybe because the offending transaction is in a past year?

When you say the balance sheet is no longer balance, do you mean the total asset is not the same as the Liabilities and Equity in the balance sheet?
