Updating Sage 50 on Windows XP

SOLVED

I know XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, unfortunately if I upgrade my computer to Windows 7, I will lose the ability to use our database so I'm a bit stuck. I need to update the tax files for Sage 50 Cdn. Is it possible to just update that alone or do I need to do the entire update?

Thanks!

    Hi Cathy,

The tax variables and calculation code is 'welded in' to the Sage 50 software.

Sage usually supports each 'version' for two years, i.e. the 2013 release will have updates to the end of the 2014 calendar / tax year.

Likewise, there should be a 2014 update that will be updated for 2015 tax, and will do the 2014 T-slips.

"Supported" usually means that if it breaks, there is an official plan to fix it when it breaks, and correct bugs as they are found, and make other software tools that work with it.  Likewise with Sage, they have to make it work on Windows 7 and 8 if they support those systems.

The opposite isn't necessarily true - Sage 50 2014 won't necessarily explode, it may continue to run fine on Windows XP through the next two revisions, for another 14 months.

If you have software that absolutely requires only Windows XP, and can't be updated, there are virtualization solutions available from Microsoft to run XP 'inside' a newer computer, or you could leave your database running undisturbed on the same hardware and operating system more or less forever, and connect to it using Remote Desktop from your new computer.

Thank you RandyW, I'll let the 'powers that be' know about running a virtual XP on a newer computer. That may solve many problems!
