Changing an account

We created a new account for the year end adjusting entries. That was fine.

A couple days later when I went to print out the monthly journals I received the following message:

"your accounts are not in logical order. The reason is: there is a missing Group Heading before account  '59---"

I am unable to open the folloiwing journals:  Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Trial Balance and General Ledger.  Because of this I am unable to do the bank reconciliation as well.

Note:  I created a new account and did a General Journal entry to bring the first account balance to zero. But not I need help in changing that account so that it no longer shows it is out of order .    Help!   - I am not an accountant so please use layman's terms if you are able to help.   THANK YOU

    Open the Chart of Accounts.

The listing should have types like:

    H  (Group Heading)

    A     (Subgroup Account)

    A     (Subgroup Account)

    S       (Subgroup total

    G       (Group Account)

    A     (Subgroup Account)

    A     (Subgroup Account)

    S       (Subgroup total

    T         (Group Total)

You need to change the type of the new account so that it 'fits'.  If it's between other 'A' and 'S' accounts, it probably has to be an 'A' instead of a 'G'.

'G' accounts can not be immediately after 'A' accounts.  They have to be after a 'G' account, and before a 'T' account.

'H' accounts can be at the very beginning, or immediately after a 'T'.

The program is saying that 59--  is after the last 'T'.    (Group Total) account.   The warning says there is no 'Group Heading' before it.

Go into your Chart of Account, pull up the account number you created and change the 'Type' to Group Account. That should correct it.

If none of the above helps, open your Chart of Accounts, go to the last account that is marked with a T for Total Account and change the number to 5999.  Save and then hit the Red checkmark in the toolbar to see if it is now correct.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to answer.  I actually finally got to talk to a Sage support via telephone and we got the matter resolved.

In future...I will definitely come here first!
