Old to new file

I am a teacher and I am having problems opening a company file that I had upgraded from 2013 to 2016, however, the file was corrupt when I opened it, thus I deleted it and then I downloaded the company info again and now I can't open it. I am receiving this error.

This file was created with sage 50 release 2013.4 or earlier you can open this file if an earlier version of Sage 50 release 2014.0 to 2015.3 is also installed.

How do I open a the company again in the old version and then upgrade it to the newer version?

There may be restrictions (or parts of the software not included) in educational versions for file conversions.

Can you open the file in the 2013 software?

Do you have the system with the 2013 file on it?

If not, do you have the installation files (not the program directory files!) and your keycode from the old system?

If you do, you could install the 2013 software on your new computer, then open the 2013 file with the 2016 software and convert it, then uninstall the 2013 release.

This may leave a bit of a mess in the file associations, so after the dust settles you could re-install the 2016 software.

I hope that helps, please post back.

No I don't have the files, the school purges them after the new software has been installed, and as a teacher I can't instll any programs on the computer.

I downloaded a new file from the website why would it have the new file info on it?

Did you not backup before you upgraded? If you did then you could recover from your backup to get back where you started.

No I usually don't because I have the template (zip file) and I always start it fresh with my students and then when I get a newer version of Sage then I upgrade to the newer version. I have never had this problem in the past. Just wondering if there is a cache that I have to clear before I start it.

The problem is that there was a database change made when the 2014 version was released. All of the 2014 and 2015 versions had a applet that converted the database to the new format. When 2016 was released the applet was no longer a part of the program as Sage only supports the most recent two years. As of right now they only support 2017 and 2016.
The only way to update your database would be to have a copy of the 2014 or 2015 installed on your computer, you don't even need to open it. But this would seem to be a problem when using the school's computers.
There may be a further problem because you have the student version of the program.
I would suggest that you call Sage and try to get a copy of the student version of the 2015 program so you can update. Do this on your own computer. Then you should be able to update the database further when you are at school.
Let us know how you make out.

I have talked to the computer department and they don't have an old copy of sage, they downloaded them from Sage directly. And I have contacted the textbook company and they are looking into it.
