Checked in with our Account Manager for the Education Partner Program who advised that "the reason is actually because the student version is 2018.0 and does not change. If the school upgrades to 2018.1, then they can no longer switch the data back and forth between the school and student version."  In other words (and I think I've run into it before) the data becomes formatted for the regular version of Sage 50. The student version can only open files formatted for it.

Thank you for your answer. That means that for students to be able to continue the work they do in class. We would need to go back to the version 2018.0 in our computer labs?

That is correct... to disable updates in the future after reinstall go to the Help menu > About Sage 50 > Support info, there are check boxes to disable the automatic download and reminder to install updates.

Please note that the 2018 Educational version uses the same download that the students would use, the serial number determines what activation screen is prompted.
