Question about allowing remote access to Sage 50 database?

Hi,

I have tried to read the Sage50 website, calling Sage support and looking into this forum but the answer is still not clear to me...

I have a very small company (2 employees) and I am looking at having my accountant working remotely. So far, the accountant has always worked from a fixed computer. With the covid-19 pandemic, I am looking at buying a laptop and having my accountant work remotely from home. My accountant should still be able to work from the desktop station from time to time so data between the latpop and the fixed station have to be shared. My accountant is the only user of Sage 50.

My question: what is the easiest and cheapest way to allow my accountant to work with Sage 50 on this new laptop?

     - Will Sage 50 let me install my current Sage 50 Pro licence a second time on the laptop (same company, same user) ? Could I then share the company file between computers by putting it on OneDrive? ($ = $0)

     - Should I buy a separate licence for the laptop in order to install Sage 50 on the laptop? Then I could access the database via OneDrive? ($ = cost of a separate Sage 50 Pro license)

     - Should I go with one of the Sage newest products (Sage 50 cloud...) or is it completely overkill for my situation? ($ = cost of Sage 50 Cloud?)

Thank you very much for your help, I am a bit lost in the options...

  • Hi MarcP:

Are you using Sage 50 currently? If you are, then Pro only allows one user at a time. Are you using the automatic Payroll calculations within Sage 50?

1st question - Yes Sage 50 can be installed on 2 separate computers. Putting your data on OneDrive is not recommended, backups ok

2nd question - You can buy a bare-bones license of Pro, but Remote Data Access (RDA) is not included. To add RDA you must purchase Sage 50c Pro version. It is a subscription product. You must pay annually or monthly to continue to use the product. RDA allows users access remotely.

3rd question - Sage 50c is fine if you can afford the monthly or yearly cost. Other options are software products that give you remote access. Some products of that nature are TeamViewer, GoToMyPC and Logmein.

    Hi Agate,

Thank you so much for the quick answer! Yes, we are currently using Sage 50 Pro in addition with the payroll feature.

3 - I am familiar with solutions like TeamViewer, LogMeIn etc... This would imply to remotely work on the desktop PC, which would require the desktop PC to stay on; which is not exactly what I am looking for.

2 - This RDA option looks like it is what I am looking for. I will however try solution 1 first and see if the need arises for a Sage cloud solution. Why are you saying that putting company data on OneDrive is not recommended?

Again, thank you very much for your support!
