Hi Karen,

If the backup of your data is in .cab format, you can use the restore backup feature of the software to regenerate the data file.  Please follow the Knowledge Base link written below to access the steps:

If you need to open the sample company to access the restore feature, for Windows 8, sample is located at

C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Simply Accounting\20XX\Samdata\Version

Thank you for your response, but, I received this error/pop up:

The file cannot be restored to the selected directory because you do not have write permissions for this directory.

I don't understand ....  Is it because I am using windows 8 ?!?!??!

Windows 7 and higher has more restrictions on using some folders.  Where are you trying to put the file?  Have you tried creating your own folder like c:\SimplyData?

I have tried to create a folder as you suggested to no avail ... I probably have to create a company (again) and then export it to that ...

My S/A 2008 data is all on a external hard drive.  I have loaded the S/A 2008 program onto a new laptop with windows 8 (which I really hate right now).  I want to get the data off the external drive onto the program on the laptop.

I can't believe the trouble I am having ...
