Cannot restore from backup

SOLVED

Hello,

I am quite a new user and have just uninstalled Sage 50 Pro Accounting 2013 from my XP computer and installed to a Windows 7 laptop. On the XP machine I was able to restore from a backup sent to me by my data entry lady. When I try the same restore from the same file on Win7 machine I get an error message

more or less "cannot open .........a required data file is missing. Check data directory"

No idea what this means - any help appreciated

    Hi,

This KB article may be able to help you with your issue.

Error: "A required file is missing" when restoring from backup - KB12669

Suggestion also is to restore the backup to a different location rather than just accept the default location suggested by the restore wizard.  For example, you can regenerate the Sage 50 data file to your own desktop or create a new folder under C:\ drive called Sage 50 data and restore the files to that newly created folder.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Further to my original post. - using win7 Home Premium, Sage 50 Pro Accounting Version 2013 (release 1) dealing with 2012 data only.

Have tried all suggested remedies I found and this seems to have been a problem for a lot of people using Win7 and Win8.

The backup I'm attempting to restore is from my data entry lady - she created the company and sent me by email a backup file made on her Win7 computer. This backup restores fine to her computer, it restores fine to my old Win XP laptop but will not restore to Win 7.

I have checked naming, created a new location on C drive, driven to town for a USB stick copy of the backup (suggestion was made that emailing it might damage it), made a new backup from the XP machine with copacting and verifications off, uninstalled and reinstalled Sage making sure I am logged on as administrator. Nothing helps.

Has anyone got any more info to solve this. I hate the thought of calling tech support as I'm feeling somewhat gouged by Sage already.

    Hi Nattres,

Please update your Sage 50 pro 2013 release 1 to the latest release 4 by downloading and installing the update file below.

    http://cdn.bestsoftware.com/ftp/sa/payrollupdates/SA_20134CPUP1.exe

After installation of the update, try to restore the backup again.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for that reply Keith. Before I act on it note that I am working on 2012 data. It's the first year of putting my company into Sage, no 2013 or 2014 data entered yet. Can I do that update and still keep working on 2012?

    Nattres,

You may have mixed up the actual fiscal year of the data file and the data format of the data file

The actual fiscal year or content of the data file can be any fiscal year that you are working on.  In your case, it is 2012 data.  However, when you open the data by Sage 50 2013,  the data format will have to be Sage 50 2013.

You say you are using Sage 50 2013 release 1 to restore a 2012 data provided by your data entry agent.  I assume that agent is using the same version of Sage 50, which is Sage 50 2013 as you do.  Therefore, I suggest you to update your Sage 50 2013 release 1 to the latest release, which is release 4.

For your information, if a data file is opened by Sage 50 2013, the format of the data will become Sage 50 2013 and it can no longer be opened by Simply Accounting 2012.  Again, the content of the data is intact.  Even though the file is opened by Sage 50 2013 and get upgraded to the Sage 50 2013, if the data is still in fiscal year 2012 or previous year, it will not change.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Keith - I'll do the update and report back. Note again though that the same backup will restore to the XP machine and not to the Win7 machine. The software is 2013 release 1 on both.

Success! Upgraded to release 4 and restored to the Win7 machine.

    Thank you for the help.

Part of my problem was self caused - after the first failure to restore I reinstalled the program and decided to use it on the 15 day deal rather than re-register on every install. This caused the update part of the program to disappear - confusion compounded by the fact that the reinstall to the XP machine also on the 15 day deal would restore.
