Basic Personal Amount 2024 Nova Scotia

SUGGESTED

All of our employees would make over $25,000 taxable income, is there a way other than manually updating each employee to change the NS Basic Personal amount from the defaulted $11,481 to the amount of $8481?

Thank you,

    Hi  ,

Thank you for reaching out! You can change this amount for multiple employees efficiently without the need for manual updates for each one.
    Here's how:

    Solution 1: Automatic Update

    1. Click on "Maintenance."
    2. Select "Update Employee Claims."
    3. Click on "Federal."
    4. Use the check boxes to the left of the employee names to select all employees you want to update.
    5. Click the "Update Basic Personal Amount" button.
    6. Then, click on "Provincial."
    7. Repeat Steps 4-5.
    8. Finally, click "Close."

    Solution 2: Manual Update

    1. Navigate to the "Employees & Payroll" module.
    2. Open the individual employee record you want to update.
    3. Go to the "Taxes" tab.
    4. In the "Personal Tax Credits" section, you can update the "Basic Personal Amount" under the Federal and Provincial columns.

These solutions allow you to efficiently update the Basic Personal Amount for your employees without the need for manual updates for each one. If you have any additional questions or need further assistance, please feel free to ask.

    Warm Regards,

I believe your question is:  Nova Scotia has three levels of basic personal amount.  $11,481 for low income employees (under $25,000 annual income), $8,481 for high-income (over $75,000 annual income), and an amount between $8,481 and $11,481 for employees with incomes inn the $25,000 - $75,000 range.  Your employees all fall into the $8,481 range, but the 'update employee claims' function updates everyone's claim to $11,481.  You want to know if there is any other easy, fast option to enter the required $8,481.

Note that this is also a problem with the federal basic personal claims, which have a similar low / medium / high income split.

Unfortunately, the answer is NO.  For any employee who doesn't fall into the 'low income' bracket, you have to open their individual employee file and hand-key the basic personal amount.  So, if none of your employees are in the 'low income' bracket, you will have to individually hand-key the basic personal amount for every single one.

The only saving grace is that you can use the forward / back buttons near the top left of the Employee Records screen to step through your employees without leaving the Taxes tab.

  • It might be easier to do this by using the instructions from Erzsi.  Don't hit the update button, just change the Basic Personal Amount to the correct one for each application employee.  Copy and Paste with the keyboard and down arrow make it very quick.  Then just hit Close.  It should update each employee.

Thanks for that, Richard.  I hadn't noticed that option.

It definitely reduces the amount of clicks required to update the outliers who need to complete TD1's each year.
