2023 T4 Reporting Error found

SUGGESTED

One employee was missing a postal code.  When the T4s were printed, no error was noted and the T4 printed correctly.  When the data was exported, this one T4 slip was not included in the data and resulted in a discrepancy notice from CRA, which means the client will incur a $100 late filing penalty.  This needs to be corrected ASAP!  Luckily, in this case it was only one employee affected.  There can not be a discrepancy in the printed T4s and the exported data!

Thanks for mentioning this issue, Amygurl.  It is a major issue and has been for many years.  The safest way to do T4's is to create them for all employees - active and inactive.  That way, you don't accidentally miss giving someone a T4 just because they were laid off on January 2 and you've forgotten about them.  However, when you choose this option, you get a great string of 'error messages' during the T4 process.  These error messages are NOT sorted by severity, they are just all lumped together alphabetically by employee name.  A lot of the 'error messages' are 'No T4 created for Smith, Jim because Smith, Jim had no earnings'.  This is NOT actually an error!  But, mixed into the middle, are actual error messages that will prevent an electronic slip from being created (but not a printed slip):

    - first line of address is blank

    - postal code is blank

    - SIN is blank

And, as you've detailed above, missing those messages can have serious consequences.  At an absolute minimum, any error messages that will actually prevent creation of an electronic slip should be in a separate section of the log file.
