Payroll December 26th

SOLVED

Hello,

My company's year end will be December 31st, 2013. The last pay period will be December 26th, covering December 13 to 25.

I have a few questions regarding this and would appreciate any assistance.:

1. What will happen with the pay from the dates 26-31? Should they go on the next January pay or should I create a special payroll day for December 26-31 and pay it out on the 31st?

2. Same issue if an employee has retained vacation pay. They will be accruing until Dec 31 so should it be paid out on the 31 or in January?

Again, any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Your last payroll for your fiscal year of Dec31/13 will be Dec26 covering 2 weeks from Dec13-25 and would include stat holiday for Dec25/13. The next payroll will be in Jan to cover from Dec26 to Jan8/14 paid Jan9/13 which will now be on the 2014 T4

This will not change and you do not want to make an extra payroll at end of Dec as that will mess up the CPP calculations which is based on your bi-weekly payroll schedule.

However for your fiscal year-end you should make an entry to Wages Payable (liability account) for the hours worked from Dec26-31/13 by all employees. I generaly just take their hours and multiply by their hourly rate and use that as the wages payable.journal entry - Cr Wages payable, Dr Wage Expense. Then on Jan9/13 make another Journal Entry to Dr Wages Payable and Cr Wage Expense and this will offset the Jan9/13 payroll which have been posted to wage expense.

As for Vac pay you just need to note each employees vac pay owed as per their Dec26/13 paychq and ensure the total of these is same amount as the Vac Payable liability account and submit that paperwork to your accountant for your year-end. You only need to pay out accrued vac pay on the anniversary date of their hire date if the employee has not taken all of it yet (as per BC employment regulations) so it is ok to leave alone for your Dec31 year-end.
