year end bank reconciliation - bank statement date is Dec 29th not 31st

My 2023 Dec actual RBC bank statement ends Dec 29th

My fiscal year ends Dec 31 2023

there is no banking transactions in my online banking for Dec 30 or 31th.

I have not yet received the Jan 2024 statement, obviously bc the month is not complete yet.

However, I believe my next bank statement (Jan  2024) will show a reporting period dated Dec30 thru Jan31.

the bank can't just skip 2 days on a statement, even if its Saturday and Sunday and nothing was posted.

Should wondering ???Should  I do a Dec30 thru Dec 31 2023 bank reconciliation in Sage - which will have nothing to post as per banking

but will have a couple written cheuqes from Dec 30th as not cashed and therefor outstanding at fiscal year end.

Then start my new fiscal year of 2024 with the Jan 2024 bank statement as simply Jan 1 2024???

Like I said there are no bank transaction that occurred on Dec 30 or Dec 31 2023.

Any insight would be appreciated

  • I have to admit I don't like banks that don't know when the end of the month really is.  Some banks setup a business bank account with end dates like the 17th of the month.

Your's is no different than mine.  It ends on the last business day of the month.  I use the end date of the end of the month on all my bank statements that end around the end of the month.  When doing my reconciliation I used Dec 31/23 as the end date.  I can usually remember the first and last day of a real month so going back and reporting on my bank recs is much easier if you stick to real monthly dates.

Many accountants I work with request the bank statements and reconciliations for the last month of the fiscal year and first month of the next year in case there is something missed.  Your next reconciliation would be from Jan 1-31 and yes, your Jan/24 statement will include Dec 30 and 31.

i was thinking about just doing a Dec 30-31st bank reconciliation in sage. Won't have any bank transaction , Will show outstanding at Dec 31,2023 . It gets sage bank reconciled for my Dec31 2023 fiscal year end . Then start 2024 sage bank reconciliation at Jan1, 2024.

because Dec 30th and 31st were not "business" days so nothing is going to appear as posted on my actual RBC statement for those dates anyway.

Then my Sage year end complete At Dec 31, 2023 and Bank reconciliation for 2023 complete At Dec31,2023 also

    Just a thought??

It sounds a whole lot harder than just using Dec 31 as your Dec statement month like I did.  It will still show the outstanding amounts.

Technically how do you do a reconciliation when you have nothing to reconcile to?  I vote that you can't so you shouldn't do it.

I do the same as you Richard.  Always 1st to 30th or 31st. Never change except for February this year the 29th.
