Printing from screen

SUGGESTED

Upgraded to Windows Server 2019 and now when BV Crystal Report is printed to screen, BV selects the first non-redirected printer instead of the workstations' default printer. When the printer is chosen it is only remembered during that session and must be re-chosen each time. All other applications choose the correct default session printer. Crystal Reports which are set to print to the default printer choose the correct session default printer. This appears to be a problem with Crystal Reports V10 and Windows Server 2019 as it also happens with a standalone version of Crystal Reports V10. BV support made some suggestions and nothing has worked. Also tried to have the specific printer driver installed on the server, also did not solve the problem. Had to remove a system default printer as it was not a redirected printer so some sensitive reports got printed there by mistake.

    Hi  ,

Thanks for reaching out. This issue can indeed be complex, as it involves the interaction between the operating system, the printer drivers, and the Crystal Reports software.

Ensuring that your Sage BusinessVision is set up to print to the screen could be a useful workaround for the time being:

    1. Log into Sage BusinessVision with the user ID you wish to set up.
    2. Click File > Printer Setup > Print Properties.
    3. Double-click 'Report' under Document type.
    4. Next to 'Print to', click on the down-arrow button and choose 'Screen'.
    5. Click the Save icon to save changes.
    6. Click the Close icon.

Doing this will direct all reports to be previewed on screen first, from where you can choose the correct printer manually for the time being.

Additionally, it might be helpful to check if there are updates available for your printer drivers or for Crystal Reports V10 that could address compatibility issues with Windows Server 2019.

If these steps don't help or if you have already tried them without success, it might be necessary to look into more specific settings or updates related to Crystal Reports and the server's printer settings. In such cases, reaching out to a technical specialist who can review the configuration in detail would be advisable.

If this helps, please mark it as verified :)

Thanks for the help Erzsi, however we have tried this approach. Crystal Reports in Businessvision does not recognize re-directed printers. This occurs when the report is sent directly to the default printer or when the report is printed from screen. We had to remove the default system printer which was set up in Windows Server 2019, as every users reports were sent to it (including sensitive reports from our off-site accountant). This appears to be a known issue with Crystal Reports V10 and Windows Server 2019. It appears to be corrected in newer versions of Crystal Reports, however BV is stuck with V10.

    Hi David,

Thanks for your patience. I've been in contact with our Sage BusinessVision Support team, and it seems that this is a known limitation with the older version of Crystal Reports that BusinessVision uses. However, we've found a potential workaround that might help. This involves changing a policy for Easy Print driver redirection in Group Policy Editor, which could allow for redirection of printers as was possible in previous versions of Windows Server.

Here’s a quick guide on how to apply this change:

    1. Open the Group Policy Editor on your Windows Server.
    2. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Printer Redirection.
    3. Find the setting for Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first and set it to Disabled.

This change might require a server restart to take effect. Please proceed with caution and consider the implications for your environment before applying this policy change.

For detailed instructions, you can refer to the Microsoft guide here: Easy Print policy change guide.

Please try this and let us know if it resolves the issue. If it does not, or if you're uncomfortable making these changes yourself, we recommend consulting with an IT professional who can assess the situation more closely.

If this helps, please mark it as verified :)

    Warm Regards,
