How SMBs can drive change for a more sustainable future

Professor and Author, Mike Berners-Lee, explains why small and medium-sized business (SMB) owners are in a unique position to influence others.

Whether that’s through staff, customers, suppliers, or others in your industry, having a platform gives you the power to influence and change a wide range of issues, including climate change.

But do you have a big enough voice on such a global issue? Can you amplify it? And how can you go about it?

Hear from Mike on why even the smallest business can make a difference. What is your key take-away? Reply below.

  • Great advice from Mike.  It's easy to feel powerless in the face of the climate crisis but so important that small business realise that they can make a difference and that, with millions of them, collectively it really matters.

I'd also recommend Mike's book 'How bad are bananas'.  Really helped me understand the relative impact of different things and where I needed to focus to reduce my personal carbon footprint.

  • Fantastic advice from Mike. Great video. Thanks sage for sharing

  • Totally agree with Mike about the importance of influencing others, from providing staff with Carbon Literacy training to making sustainability a key factor in procurement decisions.

Another important group we can influence is politicians: find out who your local MP and councillors are; get in touch with them to share why climate change matters to your business, what you're doing about it and what barriers you're facing; and let them know what they can do to break down those barriers and help you achieve your sustainability goals.

  • This is a great video, I cannot wait to apply some of the messages to our business plan redevelopment over the next few months!

  • Incredibly important not just to "Greenwash" and to be transparent with what you are trying to do.

This means being transparent not just to your customers but also other stakeholders such as staff and the local community.

  • A great perspective from Mike on the impact smaller businesses can have influencing others. As as a business Potts Print aren't obligated to measure or report our footprint or implement any environmental initiatives but we do it because, simply, it's the right thing to do. We want to lead by example and showcase to our customers large and small that we are driving for a more sustainable future
