Report designer - aggregation property

In report properties, there's an "Aggregation" property:

In sounds as if it could be useful if it passes the aggregation back to the server.

I've tried to use it in a Sales Ledger report to aggregate transactions by customer, but have had no joy.  Does it actually work, and if so could I have an example?

    I've used this with Sage 50 reports and it works just fine. Sage 200 though? Nope, no joy. Presumably it's down to the particular IDataProvider implementation in each case (or some syntactical obscurity which I've failed to stumble on). I've not bothered digging any deeper as we know there's other ways to skin this particular cat by exposing a SQL view to the data model.
