I will leave the thread open though in case anyone does run the software successfully in a virtual environment and can advise further.

Hi,

When you say Sage is installed on the server, is that the full program, or is it just the data that's on the server?

All of our servers are virtual ones running on Hyper-V, though they are hosted in-house. Sage 50 is installed locally on our laptops but accessed the data from the server and reports generally run fine.

We have a VPN connection to the office for staff working from home though and we find that if they attempt to use the sage on their laptop to access reports etc then the performance is horrendous - no doubt because of the amount of data the will be getting transferred over the VPN as Sage opens and closes all the various files, plus a VPN is never going to equal the speed of a direct connection.

We get round this by having the sage program installed on a remote desktop server and they connect to that and use sage from there, and the speed is then the same as accessing things in the office.

If you are running the actual sage program on the server then I'd ask whoever is hosting it to check the settings for anti-virus as Sage opens and closes a lot of files all the time as it works, and if each one is being scanned by AV every time it's opened then this can slow things down a lot as well.

Hello Ross Nicol  thanks for your response. Sage is installed on a Windows 2019 remote server and we are accessing it through RDP connection. We chose this way as this will be like accessing Sage on a local computer as the program and the data is on the same machine. But still a few of the reports are very slow. Excluded antivirus scan to the sage folders as a test and still same result,

There is a technology used by RDS servers called 'Fair Share', and this appears to have caused I/O bound performance issues when running reports for some users. The community posts below discuss this issue, and what steps you might take to mitigate the problem:

(As the fix involves making a registry change on the RDS server then you might have to get the third party who's hosting the VM to make the changes).
