It sounds like the user is being disconnected from the network and pressing the open location is prompting it to connect to the mapped drive. You could try changing it from connecting via a mapped drive to UNC path by following the steps here. Also look at windows permission for those users, test it by logging onto one of the PCs as the windows administrator and see if the same thing happens. 

It only started happening when they upgraded to 1803, it was fine before that.

I was hoping you wouldn't say about mapped drives, they are currently mapping drives to sharepoint online and its going to be a pain to implement (as they are AzureAD joined not regular domain)

If it has only happened since upgrading your windows 10, then you will need to speak to your IT support. The only other workarounds to suggest it using a UNC path.

I cannot use a desktop anymore, I can see the directory path and route to it put sage 50 wont work.. at my wits end
