Archiving Payment & Deduction Labels

We have a load of duplicated payments and deductions. we've been advised to rename them to DO NOT USE. The whole drop down menu in the employee  pay run looks so haphazard and confusing. The support desk are adamant that they cannot be deleted. Fine. But is there a way to archive them, I just want them removed from the drop down list! Is there any way to do this?
