I have a partner who is looking to see if it is possible to see a read receipt from an SMS message(sent from CRM using a provider such as Clickatell) in the communications tab.

As I understand it, the Read Recipt is generated and exists on the Clickatell server. I was looking the Clickatell documentation.

The Read Receipt information is only kept for 7 days after receipt. So you would have to consider whether you only want to have a live look up to the Clickatell server using their API or to have Sage CRM suck down on a regular basis the Clickatell data to be stored in Sage CRM as a communication.
It should be easy enough to design a regular window service that pulls the data down from the Clickatell server using their API and Sage CRM has web services that would allow you to insert communications against a company record. Once stored in the Sage CRM database these communications would be displayed under the regular Communication tab.
