It should be fine. The suggested limit is about 5000 rows at a time, but this isn't a hard limit.

The system won't be super-fast while this is going on, but you shouldn't need to log anyone out. I'd just suggest not doing it when you're running resource-intensive processes, like your month-end reports or similar. Full details are available in Chapter 28 of the system administrator guide.

The main caveat that I'd mention is to try and make sure that your data is clean before uploading it into the system. It's generally easier to give the data the once-over while it's still in Excel.
