Users unable to change Opportunity status on Deal Lost

We have CRM 7.2 and I cannot figure out how the user without admin rights is to change the status of an Opportunity to closed without it being sold. I have gone through the options to change the State of the opportunity are in the right hand column under Actions to move the opportunity along the sales process from lead to Proposal Submitted to Demo. The next logical change of the Stage would be either Sold or Deal Lost. Deal Lost is not one of the options for the user to choose. It never comes up in the work flow. So the only way to close out this Opportunity and change the Status from In Progress to something else is to choose Sold. This changes it to Status: Won. But what if they lost the sale? The only thing I can do is using Reassign the Opportunity which gives me the option to change the Stage to Deal Lost by reassigning it to myself. But the problem with this is that the Status still says In Progress. Which keeps this Opportunity on my active In Progress list.

The system wasn't changed much so I have to image this is the way it came out of the box. I would imagine the programmers must have expected some sales to be lost. But no options are given when that happens.

Below is an image from the default Opportunity Workflow of Sage CRM 7.3. Deal Lost is one of the possible outcomes of a Demo.

I don't think that this was changed between 7.2 and 7.3 so I guess that you need to check the actual workflow in the admin screens.

Administration -> Advanced Customisation -> Workflow

Thank you for your reply Jeff. But in 7.2 my Opportunity Workflow doesn't have that option under Demo. So I just have to change the workflow to the above and I should be alright? Never done that but will attempt if you advise.

Back up everything before you do this. And ideally test this out on a test system before doing this on a live system.

Have a look at this video

    video.sagecrm.com/playVideo.php

This video discusses the set up and creation of a new workflow rule. You are not creating a new workflow but rather changing an existing one. But it does show the dragging of rules and states into the workflow area.

You only need to edit the workflow, then drag the existing workflow rule 'Deal Lost' under the existing workflow state 'Demo' and then drag the workflow state 'Lost' under that rule.

Once you have made the change you can then 'Activate' the workflow. And test. Then test some more.
