Data Uploads for Leads: What about workflow?

I am working with a client that will have a number of people utilizing the data upload feature with on-premise Sage CRM. They will primarily be loading lead lists. For all intensive purposes the out-of-the-box Sage CRM functionality should work. However the leads that have been uploaded as a test do not actually enter the Lead workflow. I've set the Stage and Status but have no way of setting the State column through the CRM data upload (not a "field" we can map to). How do we upload lead lists into the lead workflow?

I apologize if there is an article or blog post addressing this. I've gone through the upload workbook and all of Jeff's posts to try and ensure I'm not repeating a question here. Any assistance is appreciated.

You are correct that when you import Leads that these are not automatically added to the workflow.

BUT this is should not matter from a user experience perspective. Conceptually, when a record is created but not assigned to a workflow then CRM assumes that it is in the 'virtual' state called the 'Entry State'. Below is the screen shot from the default workflow.

The 'Start' state is the Entry State in the workflow. The rule called 'New Lead' is the primary workflow rule that governs the creation of a single Lead through the interface. The Rule called 'Process Lead' is a transition rule that hangs off the Start State and in effect attaches the record to the workflow.

But you can design a workflow so that the user has no idea that they are not already in the workflow. Consider this example company workflow.

You can design the rules that hand from the Start State so they can do the same things as any transition rule that may be followed once a lead has been created by a Primary rule. You can even reuse the same rules.

Jeff I never said thank you. Thank you! Now I remember why Process Lead is in all my other workflows. Appreciate the reminder.
