I have to ask why?

The workflow state is an arbitrary label that is used to caption a resting point within the workflow process. These workflow states could be called 'a, b, c' or '1,2,3' or even 'Bucket, Banana, Orange Peel'. It just so happens that most people choose to give the states names that map to the data held in the xxxx_stage field of the entity being workflowed.

If the Current State is 'Pending Interm PO' and there is a opportunity (oppo_stage) value of 'Pending Interm PO' then it would be an easy matter to display that value at the top of the screen or even in the TopContent area.

You could use javascript to hide the current label for the workflow state but you would need to consider the potential problems that may create for long term support.
