Easy enough.  I'm assuming that everyone is on the same local network as the file server so it is just a matter of creating a UNC path.  There are a number of ways that you can achieve this; probably the best is to create the UNC path when you create the project record by way of a tablescript that updates the field based on the reference.  When is that created?  In regards to then displaying this as a hyperlink, this is slightly more tricky because you can't easily use a hyperlink field type as CRM insists on putting http in front of it, which wouldn't be correct for a UNC path.  You would have to check whether this happens after a tablescript; I don't know that.  If you use a SQL trigger instead then you will bypass that problem.  You would have to make the field read-only to make sure that nobody changed it otherwise you would then definitely have the http problem.

This is an old post I know, but I'm looking to do the same in CRM v2023. Is there anyway in a list of orders to have a column that has a link in it that can be clicked and it opens a particular file?

e.g. if I auto populate a field on Orders with a path \\MyServer\Invoices\Invoice_124.pdf then in the Orders list I can could have icon instead or some smaller text that the user can click on and the PDF opens? 

You might like to read this old post in which I explain how one might go about doing this - I think the original poster's use case is broadly similar to yours. Note that it's a thread that was migrated from the old CRM community forum, so some of the screenshots are missing; but all my example code and explanatory notes are intact.

I am going to need spent time working on this one as I just can't get it to work - and that is most likely down to me as this is all foreign to me. 

As far as i know hyper links to local folders are not allowed anymore.

One solution is to write an app and register a URI (like how mailto: works)..that opens explorer and/or that file. (we did this in our mail merge module in Accelerator - see bottom of accelerator.crmtogether.com/index.php

There are also chrome extentions i think that might resolve this also.

That's pretty much what we had to do for one of our customers when IE was deprecated Mark. A small listener service. We didn't have much joy with UNC paths and the chrome extensions paths we tested, so this was a quicker solution for us.
