Problem with company/person selection resulting from Opportunity screen customizations

When we create an opportunity, we go to the Person field first on the opportunity screen to determine what account they are calling about.   This is because one person may be associated with multiple accounts.  Anyway, we modified the dropdown box you see when searching for a person so that it includes company, acct #, city and state.  When you select the person from the list, it populates the company field as expected -- the first or second time you do it! After modifying the dropdown, the function of populating the company with the company selected from the person dropdown works one time, some times a few times, and then it quits working altogether.

Our reseller is stumped.  Sage Support has reproduced this issue but does not yet have a solution.

We are on CRM 7.2b and Sage 2014, integrated.

Basically, when we customize the Person search dropdown on the Opportunity screen, the company only autopopulates the first time you customize the dropdown and then stops working.

Has anyone else customized their Person dropdown on their Opportunity screen and does auto populating the company field still work for you?  Thanks.
