The one thing that helps on speed is memory.  Hard drive size or type really makes no difference. What version are you on? Standard, Advanced or Premium.

It really depends on the performance bottleneck you are experiencing.  If your CPU is constantly at 100%, a new SSD won't help.  Same goes for if your memory is insufficient, or network infrastructure is insufficient.

For reliability, go with a RAID array, not a single drive.

We have reliablitiy already - but logging into the SQL server, backing up, and upgrading take huge amounts of time. Migrating to an SSD will improve R/W times by 3X if I am correct.

And if R/W times are not the bottleneck, how does that help?

I have an SSD for my workstation's system drive because disk speed is typically what holds up a workstation's performance, but with servers it can be many things.  You need to do testing on the actual machine in question.

How would you go about testing this?

Use your favorite performance monitoring tools.  If you need tips for that, perhaps go to a Windows server forum?

If there are specific Sage 100 processes causing things to slow down, you might gain insights here on what Sage 100 is doing during those processes, but for general Windows server information... there are probably better resources elsewhere.

 to allow quicker reports: Nothing much you can do except go to the SQL version. It is somewhat hardware related. You would want to have the fastest network.

faster database upgrades: What do you mean here If you mean posting of journals then it is all memory on the server if you have advanced or premium. If you mean upgrades of the program itself again it's memory on the server.

I mean logging in, running reports, and general speed. I ran tests to see what was taking so long in my Proccess Panel but have not noticed anything taking a severe chunk of our power away. It seems that the drive is working a little hard when I run the report though so I think switching our database to an SSD will be beneficial but still am wondering if anyone else has done it.

I suggest that you post your report. There may be a way to increase performance based on the tables and fields in your criteria.
