Loooong serial numbers!

Just had a client start using Scanco Warehouse and are switching some items to serial number costing.

Going great until they came across a manufacturer whose serial numbers are 25-30 characters in length! Sage 100 serial number field is only 15 characters. Without Scanco you would simply strip off the leading characters which tend to be the same. No big deal there.

However if scanning the barcode for the serial numbers, it is going to pull in the entire serial number and not know how to strip the leading characters. Investigating the possibility of Scanco customizing to do this.

Anyone already have a possible solution to this?

We used Scanforce and they customized it to pull the last 15 characters. I'm sure Scanco can do the same.

DSD offers an enhancement to expand Lot/Serial to 40 -

CIEL Extended Lot/Serial Numbers

Extended Lot/Serial Numbers (CIEL) modifies the modules below to change the Lot/Serial Number field to be 40 characters instead of 15 characters.

Purchase Order Processing

RMA

Bill of Materials

It is possible to program scanners to strip off the leading characters when scanning. Have done it before.

Tom, I had done this with scanners before. Usually they have instructions on how to program in the users manual. Have done it on Symbol scanners mostly. I have stripped out characters and added carriage returns.

We are also seeing this. We have a vendor who's serial numbers are 18 characters. We will just enter the last 15 characters. But the field should really be expanded.
