Use of Kits in Manufacturing

How should kits be used when kits are assembled or packaged to order? If we explode items on SO, so individual components are removed from inventory we get very confusing packing lists and picking sheets that make it look like the kit, AND the individual components need to be shipped or received. Is there a way to remove individual components from inventory without it showing up on the Sales Order, Picking Sheet, Packing List, etc? Attached is an image of a confusing packing list.

I an open to being persuaded that the Bill of Materials Module would be preferable than kits in this situation, but it would be inconvenient at this time to purchase said module, and would like to get by with kits if possible. Still, if there are definite advantages for this type of activity when done through this module, I would appreciate any information on the subject.

Thank you for your time.

For your purposes, I would just modify the packing list so that the quantities did not show for the kit, and also have the component lines indented underneath the kit.  This would not effect what was removed from inventory, it would just make it clearer on paper.

However...how you handle the picking list might be different depending on how you are doing your invoicing. If you are allowing backordering of items within the kit, you need to determine when you are actually going to charge the customer because it is the kit quantity that determines the extended price.  If you always ship all of the kit components, then you only need to enter the quantity shipped for the kit line and the component quantity shipped should automatically be populated.  So you will probably want to keep the quantity visible on the picking list.

Could this be done without Crystal Reports? I am asking because we have very limited experience using that application.

It's a field in the works file. 107  SkipPrintCompLine   Why is it so hard to check the box in Kit Maintenance  in Bill of Materials or Inventory Kit Maintenance.

If you read between the lines, they are not really asking to suppress all the kit items, they are just experiencing confusion because they have a problem differentiating between the Kit "item" and what it contains.  And they don't want customers to be confused and think they should be receiving an additional item.  If the kits are not all prepackaged, and they need to pick the individual items, it is still helpful to show those components on the picking sheet especially.

Actually in his original post he said " Is there a way to remove individual components from inventory without it showing up on the Sales Order, Picking Sheet, Packing List, etc?   And they way to do that is to check the box in either Kit Maintenance in Inventory or Bill of Material to Skip Printing of Component.  The forms are set to read that field and to suppress if they field is set to "Y"

That's why I said "if you read between the lines."  You are correct about how to do WHAT he asked how to do, my point was trying to address WHY he asked, because I suspect that once those components stop displaying, that there are going to be no issues that arise because of that.

However, if the original poster truly wants to suppress the lines then Big Louie, is, as always, correct.  And the user, as always, needs to RTFM.
