Why not create a new item that is a 'kit' item and place the serialized item and the other item as components in that new "kit" item. You could still keep it serialized.

Thank you for your reply, this is normally what we do with a new product. However this is an established product that is advertised under a specific model number and it would create a lot of confusion with both our salespeople and our customers.

Only one problem, you cannot set valuation method to serial when the product type is kit. You would have to change to something other than Lot or Serial. You would not lose the history, it would still be there.  The suggested Kit option is your best option. Other option would be a script that added a line with the additional component any time that item is ordered.

Renumber the serial item code to be something else (which retains history within the new code) then create a new item with the original name, as a kit, with the renamed serial item as a component.

Personally I like BigLouie's suggestion of scripting a line with the additional component... which is much clearer what is happening, but order edits have to be done carefully to keep the quantities consistent.

On your kit item number you could setup an alias number that is the original item number. You would then need to edit your forms to print the alias number when one exists.
