BARCODE

I got the duty to implement barcodes in our system. First at all, I do not have a lot of knowledge when it comes to computer engineering. The company is small and we have about 900 articles on stock.

I would like to know which steps we have to follow to implement barcodes from the barcode reader to SAGE 100.

Following our current situation / starting point:

- The stock is situated in another building, no internet connection yet (actually a manuell stock recording)

- Article numbers contain also letters, we would like to use the article numbers as barcodes (2D barcode reader needed?)

- We have a brother barcode printer with software

My question is, what do we need to start with the barcode scanning of the stock? Which hardware and software is needed?

    Hey Luciana!

That is an excellent question. There are actually a few ways that you can implement barcoding into your inventory processes. One of the most common ways is with a complete automation system like Scanco. We can automate all, or just selected pieces of your inventory processes. To completely answer your question I would like to speak with you regarding your actual processes and end goals. That way I could guide you in the right direction, even if it means not choosing Scanco as your barcode provider.

First thing to remember is that bar codes is just that, numbers or letters coded in bars. Nothing fance. If you have a part number ABC123 then this is coded in bars and when you scan it comes out as ABC123.  You do not need a 2D bar code, plain old 1D will do fine. Second with a scanner all it is doing is replacing manual data entry. Instead of typing in with a keyboard, you scan. That's all.

Now if you want to do task in the other warehouse and then store it somehow and then upload it into MAS, then you would use a hand held computer/scanner that stores the info and then uploads a file when you return to the main warehouse and upload the file to MAS.

Thank you BigLouiem, one point I forgot to mention is that we have a showroom. When the clients come in we would like to give immediate info on quantities on stock. Would it be possible with a barcode reader or do you have to go always to the computer to check the quantities? I read that they are mobile barcode terminals?

Which EAN code is suggested for ABC123 numbers? I was thinking of the QR code so that the clients could scan with their smartphone the articles they like. So they could have price, discription and a link to a picture and think about it before they take a decision.

    Is that realizable?

Actually we give printed quotes to the customers.

    1. On checking the quantity on hand, you would need some type of hand held computer that is linked with MAS so that scanning the bar code pulls up the information.  Scanco who posted in this thread, I believe does have an application that will do that for you. However you could build something yourself using a tablet/iPad and remote connect software and off the shelf WiFi for very cheap.

    2. As for which bar code to use. Plain old Code128 is one of the most popular one dimensional codes being used today. You don't need QR to be able to scan with smartphones.

    3. If you want price, description and a link to a picture then you would need a 2B bar code for sure.
