In Common Information>Setup>Common Information Options, you can change the decimal places for Prices, Quantity, Cost , and UOM Conversion fields. This is a global change and you will see it in all data entry screens.  For example, if you change Quantity, you will see it in Sales Orders and Purchase Orders, as well as any other modules that have a quantity field.  

Common Information Options.  Standard fields not changed by those settings are fixed format.  UDF's are limited to 3 decimals.

Create your UDF as text and do the string / numeric conversions via script.

I'd do a column post validate script to check for isnumeric on the value before accepting it ( if not isnumeric... then SetError...).  Still stored as a string... you just want to make sure the numeric conversion will work later.

Whenever you want to use the value in a script, just get the text value and cDbl it into a number before you use it.
