So I was asked to increase the size of the item code and PO# fields. I know from previous question you can't change the standard out of the box fields you would need to create a UDF.
However, I don't see how you can swap those standard fields for the UDF I would think that "would mess up something up" for a lack of better terms.

ItemCode can be expanded (15 to 30 characters), but be VERY CAREFUL with this. There is no undo, and it affects many things (especially printed forms / reports). Once enabled, you cannot turn it off. Be sure to test (in a test company code) before changing this in your Live company code(s).
PO# in the PO module: there is an enhancement. (A UDF cannot replace a key field).
Customer PO#: it's just a text field... just add a UDF and swap it out wherever you want (panels, forms, lookups...).
