You could setup Misc Items and assign expense GL codes to them. It is not possible to have non-inventory item numbers. What you could do is setup a separate product line for consumable goods and instead of posting to the inventory account it would post to the expense account you setup for consumables. However when you run various inventory reports such as Trial Balance and Stock Status you would have to remember to exclude that product line.
