You can run a macro every day that sets the customer on hold if they exceed their credit terms.
New sales orders can be entered, but they will be placed on hold automatically. It will require a credit override before you can ship the orders.
This is a simple workaround we run at one customer, it does not require a lot of customization or thinking on the part of users.
